Founded in 2005 by Joyce Mabel Lou, Arte Flamenco Malaysia is blessedly supported by a core group of flamenco enthusiasts and friends.

Joyce Mabel last resided in Manila, Philippines, and was first introduced to Flamenco and Spanish dances there. She studied under the tutelage and guidance of Ms Marissa Aboitiz, and has had the privilege to perform with Ms Aboitiz’s dance company, Grupo de Baile Andaluz in Manila. Joyce Mabel was also trained by Senor Guillermo Gomez, a much respected figure in the flamenco community in Manila.

Upon her return to Kuala Lumpur, Joyce Mabel found only a handful of flamenco enthusiasts. With her passion for the dance, she tirelessly worked towards her goals of generating interest in and introducing flamenco to Malaysians.

Arte Flamenco is also a member of the Spanish Dance Institute, now known as the Instituto de la Danza Española (SDI), which was established in 1985.  Arte Flamenco remains to be the only formal studio in Malaysia recognized by the Institute offering its syllabus.

In December 2007, Arte Flamenco reached another milestone by presenting and staging the first ever locally produced flamenco theatrical production, SUEÑOS DE AMOR. SUEÑOS DE AMOR was presented in conjunction with the Rose Borromeo Spanish Dance Company and was co-sponsored by Internexia Sdn Bhd under the auspices of Puan Bismilah Kadir.

Joyce Mabel continues her passion for flamenco with continued tutelage under Maestra Deanna Blacher, founder of the Instituto, Ms Rose Borromeo, Artistic Director and founder of Rose Borromeo Spanish Dance Company (RBSDC) and Mr Angel Gomez, Professor de Baile SDI. In addition, she regularly attends workshops by renowned artistes such as Jose Galvan, Antonio Vargas, Aida Gomez, Sarah Baras, Francine Sweet and Clara Ramona and the Compania Miguel Sergovia in KL and in Spain. Joyce Mabel is also proud to be a member of the Rose Borromeo Spanish Dance Company, based in Singapore.

Arte Flamenco currently meets and conducts classes out of Sun Yoga and Caterpillar Studio.
